Dissertation: States, Movements and the New Politics of Blackness in Colombia and Brazil

This dissertation examines the role that black social movements have played in the recent shift from colorblind state discourses to the adoption of ethno-racial policies in Colombia and Brazil in the 1990s. It also analyzes the impact of achieving such reforms on both internal black movement dynamics and movement actors’ relationships with the state. It draws on 18 months of ethnographic fieldwork including 107 in-depth interviews and an extensive analysis of social movement and government documents.
